Mara Salvatrucha (commonly abbreviated as MS, Mara, and MS-13) is a
criminal gang that originated in Los Angeles and has spread to Central A
merica, other parts of the United States, and Mexico.The majority of
the gang is ethnically composed of Central Americans an active in urban and
suburban areas.

Members of MS distinguish themselves by tattoos covering the body and also often the
face as well as the use of an own sign language. They are notorious for their use of
violence and a subcultural moral code that predominantly consists of merciless revenge
and cruel retributions.

This excessive cruelty of the distinguished members of the "Maras" or "Mareros",
earned them a path to be recruited by the criminal organization of Sinaloa, Joaquin
Guzman, to be trained in handling weapons and counter the force from the Gulf Organization
(Los Zetas), a war that rages south of the United States Border.

History
The Mara Salvatrucha gang originated in Los Angeles, set up in the 1980s by
Salvadoran immigrants in the city's Pico-Union neighborhood who immigrated to the
United States after the Central American civil wars of the 1980s.There is some dispute
about the etymology of the name. The most common belief is that
Mara refers to the word for gang in Spanish slang; it is suggested that Salvatrucha refers
to the Salvadoran guerrillas, the source of much of the gang's early manpower.

Originally, the gang's main purpose was to protect Salvadoran immigrants from other,
more established gangs of Los Angeles, who were predominantly composed of Mexicans and
African-Americans.

Many Mara Salvatrucha gang members from the Los Angeles area have been deported after
being arrested. As a result of these deportations, members of MS have recruited more
members in their home countries. The Los Angeles Times contends that deportation policies
have contributed to the size and influence of the gang both in the United States and in
Central America.

In recent years the gang has expanded into the Washington, D.C. area, in particular
the areas of Langley Park and Takoma Park near the Washington border have become centers
of MS gang activity.

Publicized crimes
On July 13, 2003, Brenda Paz, a 17-year-old female, former MS member turned informant
was found stabbed on the banks of the Shenandoah River in Virginia. Paz was killed for
informing the FBI about Mara Salvatrucha criminal activities. Two of her former friends
were later convicted of the murder.

In 2004, the FBI created the MS National Gang Task Force. In 2005, the FBI helped
create a National Gang Information Center and outlined a National Gang Strategy for
Congress.

On December 23, 2004, one of the most widely publicized MS crimes in Central America
occurred in Chamelecón, Honduras when an intercity bus was intercepted and sprayed with
automatic gunfire, killing 28 civilian passengers, most of whom were women and children.
MS organized the massacre as a protest against the Honduran government for proposing a
restoration of the death penalty in Honduras. Six gunmen raked the bus with gunfire. As
passengers screamed and ducked, another gunman climbed aboard and methodically executed
passengers. In February 2007, Juan Carlos Miranda Bueso and Darwin Alexis Ramírez were
found guilty of several crimes including murder and attempted murder. Ebert Anibal Rivera
was held over the attack and was arrested after having fled to Texas.Juan Bautista Jimenez, accused of masterminding the massacre, was killed in prison. According to the authorities, fellow MS-13 inmates hanged him.[15] There was insufficient evidence to convict Óscar Fernando Mendoza and Wilson Geovany Gómez.

Miranda, an ex-high ranking soldier and one of the founders of Mara Salvatrucha, was
murdered at his home in El Salvador a few hours after declining to attend a party for
a gang member who had just been released from prison. He had begun studying law and
working to keep children out of gangs.

On June 4, 2008, in Toronto, Ontario, police executed 22 search warrants, made 17 arrests
and laid 63 charges following a five-month investigation.

On June 22, 2008, in San Francisco, California, a 21-year old MS gang member, Edwin Ramos,
shot and killed a father, Anthony Bologna, 48, and his two sons Michael, 20, and Matthew,
16, after their car briefly blocked Ramos from completing a left turn down a narrow street
as they were returning home from a family barbecue.

On November 26, 2008, Jonathan Retana was convicted of the murder of Miguel Angel Deras,
which the authorities linked to an MS initiation.
In 2008, the MS task force coordinated a series of arrests and crackdowns in the U.S. and
Central America that involved more than 6,000 police officers in five countries.
Seventy-three suspects were arrested in the U.S.; in all, more than 650 were taken
into custody.

In February 2009, authorities in Colorado and California arrested 20 members of MS and
seized 10 pounds of methamphetamine, 2.3 kilograms (5 pounds) of cocaine, a small amount
of heroin, 12 firearms and $3,300 in cash.

In June 2009, Edwin Ortiz, Jose Gomez Amaya and Alexander Aguilar were MS gang members
from Long Island who had mistaken bystanders for rival gang members. As a result, two
innocent civilians were shot. Edgar Villalobos, a laborer was killed.

Illegal immigration and human smuggling
According to The Washington Times, MS "is thought to have established a major smuggling
center" in Mexico.There were reports by the Minuteman Project that MS members were
ordered to Arizona to target U.S. Border Patrol agents and Minuteman Project volunteers.

In 2005, Honduran Security Minister Oscar Alvarez and the President of El Salvador raised
alarm by claiming that Muslim terrorist organisation Al-Qaeda was meeting with Mara
salvatrucha and other Central American gangs to help them infiltrate the United States.
FBI agents said that the U.S. intelligence community and governments of several Central
American countries found there is no basis to believe that MS is connected to Al-Qaeda or
other Islamic radicals, although Oscar did visit Central America to discuss the issue.

Robert Morales, a prosecutor for Guatemala, indicated to The Globe and Mail that some
Central American gang members seek refugee status in Canada. Superintendent of the Royal
Canadian Mounted Police integrated gang task force, John Robin, said in an interview that
"I think [gang members] have a feeling that police here won't treat them in the harsh
manner they get down there." Robin noted that Canadian authorities "want to avoid
ending up like the U.S., which is dealing with the problem of Central American gangsters
on a much bigger scale".

On the southern border of Mexico, the gang has unleashed violence against migrants.

Etymology
There are various possible explanations for the name Mara Salvatrucha. Some sources
state the gang is named for La Mara, a street in San Salvador, and the Salvatrucha
guerrillas who fought in the Salvadoran Civil War. Additionally, the word mara means
gang in Caliche and is taken from marabunta, the name of a fierce type of ant.
"Salvatrucha" may be a combination of the words Salvadoran and trucha, a Caliche word
for being alert.

Many Mara Salvatrucha members cover themselves in tattoos. Common markings include
"MS", "Salvatrucha", the "Devil Horns", the name of their clique, and other symbols.
A December 2007 CNN internet news article stated that the gang was moving away from the
tattoos in an attempt to commit crimes without being noticed.

Members of Mara Salvatrucha, like members of most modern American gangs, utilize a
system of hand signs for purposes of identification and communication. One of the most
commonly displayed is the "devil's head" which forms an 'M' when displayed upside down.
This hand sign is similar to the same symbol commonly seen displayed by heavy metal
musicians and their fans. Founders of Mara Salvatrucha borrowed the hand sign after
attending concerts of heavy metal bands.

A mass shooting late Saturday night has left one dead and five injured after Portland-area Antifa held a gathering in solidarity with Amir Locke, a 22-year-old black man who was shot by police in Minneapolis earlier this month.

A woman was pronounced deceased at the scene, and two men and three women were taken to nearby hospitals, according to the New York Times. Two suspects are reportedly in custody in response to the shooting, according to KPTV.

The shooting occurred at around 8 pm near Normandale Park.

Tweets from Antifa members and groups told far-left comrades that were present not to talk to police investigating the shooting, to delete evidence posted on social media, and to keep posts including photos, videos, and first-hand accounts related to the incident to a minimum “so that you don’t receive a knock.”

Antifa “journalist” Melissa Lewis, who was a co-plaintiff in a failed frivolous “Antifa troll” lawsuit filed in federal court against The Post Millennial‘s editor-at-large Andy Ngo, said that “[o]ne of us got a chunk of the shooter.”

Antifa Hailley Nolan hijacked a Portland Police news conference the next morning and in an incoherent rant, blamed cops for the dead woman and the others who were wounded. The woman, Hailley Nolan breathlessly claimed that white supremacist cops are sending Gypsy Joker motorcycle club members to snatch Antifa members.

Back on Saturday, July 16 members of Antifa followed through on vows to try disrupting a gathering at the HonkyTonk Bar in Salem, Oregon. The result of the far-left group’s actions is what some are predicting to be a war between them and several motorcycle clubs throughout Oregon. If that sounds to you like a confrontation which would be wise to back away from, you’re not alone. What happens next could be ugly.

Originally, Antifa groups began rallying members and supporters to join a “counter demonstration” for the “Take Action Tour” event being held at the HonkyTonk Bar. They characterized the venue’s gathering as “racist” and catering to both “fascists” as well as “white supremacists.” That event was marketed by the bar as “Hero Appreciation Day” complete with a dunk tank, bike show, eating contest, live music, bouncy house, family-friendly karaoke, free hot dogs, etc.

According to several Twitter posts from accounts journalist Andy Ngo says are Antifa members, the group which confronted them was the Free Souls Motorcycle Club. The one percenter motorcycle club might not have the household brand name of the Hells Angels, however its roots run deep. Founded in Eugene, Oregon in 1968 there’s considerable controversy over the details of its foundation, history, and what its aims are today. Regardless, Antifa seems poised to take it and other one percenter motorcycle clubs on in Oregon, promising for a confrontation like they’ve never seen.
White Rose of the Willamette Valley used its Twitter account to complain after Salem police didn’t protect their fellow Antifa members during the confrontation. It said Free Souls and “other uniformed security” both “attacked and injured community members peacefully protesting” without supplying details or other evidence. Unlawful whatever on Twitter claimed “one of ours” was hospitalized from the fight, retweeting a different person claiming “Salem police literally backed away” when the Free Souls came out to confront them. Another Antifa account proceeded to dox several people involved in the confrontation, tagging their supposed employers as well as releasing other personal details.
It's not like Antifa is unfamiliar with physical confrontation. Per Andy Ngo, one of the organizers of the demonstration at the HonkyTonk Bar was arrested in 2021 after allegedly hitting a female police officer. Ngo claimed another in attendance plead guilty the week before for doing over $164,000 in damages to a courthouse.

Though the jury's still out on the veracity of Anonymous' showdown with south-of-the-border bullies, Barrett Brown has emerged as the face of the hacktivist collective, which last week bit off possibly more than it could chew when it threatened the Mexican drug cartel Los Zetas.
Last week we told you how Anonymous drew a line-in-the-sand ultimatum, threatening to go public with the identities of local police, journalists, taxi drivers and other allies who conspire with Los Zetas if the cartel didn't release a kidnapped Anonymous member.
Though Anonymous apparently called off their Operation Cartel (#OpCartel) after Los Zetas allegedly returned the kidnapped victim, Brown has decided to flee his Dallas home over concerns for his security. On Nov. 8, he tweeted, "I've got ex-military people releasing info on me and family. Have to leave Texas."
According to a tweet, members of #OccupyDC picked up the tab for a plane ticket to New York City after Brown tweeted "Anyone who can buy me ticket to NYC/Boston and have me pay them back in month, let me know. Transistor@hushmail.com. Home no longer secure."
Perhaps fleeing to more northern exposures was a good move for Brown - especially after a Mexican man was found decapited and dumped in the town of Nuevo Laredo, one mile from the Texas border. The man's hands were handcuffed behind his back, his body and head publicly strewn on a bloody sheet of canvas scrawled with the message: "Hi I'm ‘Rascatripas' and this happened to me because I didn't understand I shouldn't post things on social networks."

Etymology

There is some dispute about the etymology of the name. Some sources state the gang is named for La Mara, a street in San Salvador, and the Salvatrucha guerrillas who fought in the Salvadoran Civil War.^[8] Additionally, the word mara means gang in Caliche slang and is taken from marabunta, the name of a fierce type of ant. "Salvatrucha" may be a combination of the words Salvadoran and trucha, a Caliche word for being alert. The term "Salvatruchas" has been explained as a reference to Salvadoran peasants trained to become guerrilla fighters, referred to as the "Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front." The ‘13’ is believed to stand for the letter M, the thirteenth letter of the alphabet, but it is also rumored to pay homage to a California prison gang, the Mexican Mafia.^[9]

Central Americans are the primary targets of violence and threats of violence by MS-13.^[10] Many of the victims are minors.^[11] Minors also make up the majority of suspects arrested for killings attributed to MS-13. Many school districts receiving Central American migrants were reluctant to admit unaccompanied teenagers when they arrived from Central America, which left them at home and vulnerable to gang recruitment.^[11] Recruitment is often forced. In El Salvador, children are recruited while traveling to school, church, or work. Youth who are arrested for whatever reason are usually impressed into some gang or another during incarceration.^[12] They are notorious for their violence and a subcultural moral code based on merciless retribution. MS-13 is often public in its violence. Infanticide and femicide are common, with El Salvador hosting the third-highest femicide rate in the world. In 2016, one in 5,000 Salvadoran women were killed. Legal impunity is a key factor. In femicide cases, only 5% result in convictions.^[19] Violent retributions target both enemy gangs as well as their families, friends, and neighbors. Entire families will be wiped out in a single attack, regardless of age. Buses full of passengers from the wrong parts of town will be burned in broad daylight, passengers still aboard.^[20] Police officers, government officials, and community organizations are also frequent targets. Attacks like these have led the Supreme Court of El Salvador to authorize the classification of gangs as terrorist organizations.^[21

This cruelty of the distinguished members of the "Maras" or "Mareros" resulted in some being recruited by the Sinaloa Cartel battling against Los Zetas in an ongoing drug war in Mexico.^[22]^[23]^[24] Their wide-ranging activities have drawn the attention of the FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, who have initiated wide-scale raids against known and suspected gang members, arresting hundreds across the United States.^[25] In an interview with Bill Ritter in late 2017, Nassau County, New York District Attorney Madeline Singas, referring to crimes committed by MS-13 gang members, stated: "The crimes that we're talking about are brutal. Their weapon of choice is a machete. We end up seeing people with injuries that I've never seen before. You know, limbs hacked off. And that's what the bodies look like that we're recovering. So they're brutal. Many Mara Salvatrucha members cover themselves in tattoos, including the face. Common markings include "MS", "Salvatrucha", the "Devil Horns", and the name of their clique.^[29] By 2007, the gang was moving away from face tattoos to make it easier to commit crimes without being noticed.^[30]
Members of Mara Salvatrucha, like those of most modern American gangs, utilize a system of hand signs for purposes of identification and communication. Tau Gamma Phi (ΤΓΦ), also known as Triskelions’ Grand Fraternity, is a fraternity established in the Philippines. Its members call themselves Triskelions.
Tau Gamma Phi is one of the largest fraternities in the Philippines in terms of membership.^[1] It has a sister sorority, Tau Gamma Sigma (ΤΓΣ), also known as the Triskelions' Grand Sorority.

History
The fraternity was founded on October 4, 1968 by students from the University of the Philippines Diliman.^[2] Originally known as the Order of the U.P. Triskelions, the organization later adopted the Greek-letter name Tau Gamma Phi.^[3]
In 1969, the fraternity established a chapter at the Philippine Maritime Institute. This was followed in 1970, with chapters at FEATI University, Mapúa Institute of Technology, and National University, in 1971 with a chapter at University of Santo Tomas, and in 1973 with chapters at Adamson University and the National College of Business Administration.^[3]
When martial law was declared on September 21, 1972, by the late Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, some university organizations including Tau Gamma Phi became targets of military harassment, believing that these school organizations posed a threat to the Marcos regime.^{[citation needed]}
With martial law hindering most of its activities, the fraternity faced a decline in recruitment. In 1975, the fraternity explored the idea of including younger members. Recruitment began in the high school sector with the Junior Tau Gamma Phi (also known as the Junior Triskelions) founded at San Beda College–High School on February 7, 1974.^[4]
The fraternity celebrated its 45th founding anniversary in 2013, with President Benigno Aquino III offering an official message of congratulations to the organization.^[5]
